Description

Experience the tranquil pleasure of a tropical fish aquarium without the need for feeding and maintenance. Beautifully expressing the strong tie between the tiny islands of Venice and the briny lagoon in which they reside, this Murano Glass Aquarium is handmade by Murano glass blowers. Colorful fish, underwater reeds, and decorations are created from glass rods, called murrina, then skillfully embedded (while nearly molten) within the glass "tank" of this enchanting Murano Glass Aquarium. The result is a masterful illusion of movement made more vibrant and magical in natural light.

Museum Story

This extraordinary Murano Glass Aquarium calls to mind the breathtaking interactive experience offered by our National Museum of Natural History's Sant Ocean Hall while celebrating the exceptional collection of Murano glass curated by our National Museum of American History. Renowned the world over for their centuries-long mastery of the fluid art of mouth-blown glass, Murano glass artisans create unique works of heirloom art.

This is a beautiful any where you might place it. I have it in our living room on a glass sofa table. It is near a window where the sun hits it. Any one who has come into our house comments on how beautiful it is. I ordered this one as a gift and I kept it. I later ordered another one for my brother's 50th birthday. He loved it, too! One in catalog had 6 distinct fish - mine has 3 red ones - 2 of which are solid - craftsmanship where the glass is fused is shoddy - amateurish - the whole piece is obviously the work of an apprentice - I will never again purchase anything on line from the Smithsonian and plan on cancelling the catalog - very disappointed ! It looks very nice. I was pleased that the piece looked just like the picture in the catalog. (You know how sometimes you order something and it doesn't look like what you ordered?) It was on sale, so that was a plus. Shipping time was fine. I like it. I collect glass, and have a "sea" motif space, so this fit in well. Sonoma, CA

It's so so lovely! I have a light that shines down on it at night. I just like to use it for quiet times to just look at. I am a budget shopper and have NEVER EVER spent this much on something like this but it is so worth it. I'm just keeping an eye on this site hoping the price will drop enough to purchase one or two more as future gifts for grandchildren that I don't even have and though neither of my two daughters are even thinking about kids I am. Yeah that sounds crazy but this piece is so great. I only wish there was a real life size one that I could afford. If you are thinking of buying one for a child it's not something I would purchase to leave them alone with just because it is glass but they could certainly touch it or hold it while supervised because it is not fragile at all. It is a very solid piece. Way heavier and bigger than I thought it would be so really glad it was packaged so well. San Antonio, TX

I've admired this for a long time and thought I'd love one for my desk so that I have some beautiful colors and design to admire. I finally purchased it and I love it! It is gorgeous. It is bigger then I thought it would be and the light shines beautifully through it. A great piece! Toronto, ON, CA
