Description

Adorn your refrigerator (or any metal surface) with this fanciful quartet of hand-enameled Cloisonné Butterfly Magnets—each uniquely shaped and individually patterned. Butterflies are symbols of joy in Chinese culture. Set of 4. Made in China.

Museum Story

An art form originating in the Middle East and elevated in China, after its arrival there in the 13th and 14th centuries, the cloisonné technique adorns copper or bronze objects with copper wire designs. The resulting cells are then filled with enamel, fired in a kiln and polished, creating a harmonious contrast between the gleaming metal and the jewel-hued enamel. These charming Cloisonné Butterfly Magnets are reminiscent of butterfly depictions found on cloisonné vases in our National Museum of Natural History’s Asian ethnological collections.

I originally received one butterfly as a gift along with other club members. Mine has been very stable and beautiful. I became interested in the Smithsonian and have since ordered several sets. I've given two sets recently to friends who were thrilled. I also ordered booklets on butterfly blessings and included one along with the magnets. Bettendorf, IA

A special friend lost her stepmother just before Christmas. The experience was very difficult, and she was filled with a great deal of pain. In order to freshen up, she left her mother-in-law's room after she was pronounced dead. When she returned to the hospital room she caught a glimpse of a butterfly against a turquoise background. At that moment she remembered that a butterfly signified hope as well as spring with its beautiful colors. To Christians the butterfly is also a symbol of the resurrection...another symbol of hope. I am hoping that this will be a daily reminder of a very special lady who loved her very much. Costa Mesa, CA

I bought these Cloisonné Butterflies from the Smithsonian Store on the internet. It was a first purchase to try out the process and the Smithsonian Store. I paid FedEx to deliver the product which was quite expensive but certainly speedy. I was happy with the appearance of the butterflies. I took 2 for myself. I shifted one's position on the fridge and the magnet detached from the butterfly and remained on the fridge and the magnet and its container detached from the second one, I had already dropped off several butterflies as small Christmas/New year presents with the sentiment of "have a beautiful 2017".I am so embarrassed that they will have the same experience as me and am no longer going to give one each to my special bookclub friends and will not purchase again from the Smithsonian Store because of doubts about the quality.
