Description

In the three weeks after the Post Office announced this stamp, more than 500,000 people wrote in requesting first day covers—a fifth of them from overseas. One Washington newspaper called it a souvenir of "man's boldest adventure into space." Collectors know it as Scott C76, issued September 9, 1969, and designed by Paul Calle, a NASA sketch artist who had drawn the Apollo 11 crew in preparation for their mission and watched them launch from Cape Kennedy. The stamp was made from the same master dye the astronauts carried to the Moon.
