Museum Story

Wilson A. Bentley (1865-1931), a self-educated Vermont farmer, was so enthralled by snowflakes that he adapted a microscope to a bellows camera to capture images of these tiny beauties. His pioneering work in photomicrography produced thousands of pictures of different snowflakes and proved that each fleeting snowflake was a unique masterpiece. Almost 500 of these photos were bestowed to the Smithsonian by Mr. Bentley. Now curated by our National Museum of American History, these striking images inspired our selection of glittering gifts, decorative pieces and apparel.

My wife had bought a similar pin/pendant from Smithsonian years ago, and lost it. She happened to mention her sadness that she didn't have it anymore so I bought it for her. She was quite pleased and has worn it everyday since. It arrived on time and is quite well made. Denver Colorado

This is a well crafted, durable and beautiful sparkling snowflake. It can be worn as a necklace with the enclosed cord or pinned on a lapel, coat or hat. It can also be hung on the Christmas tree as an ornament. It is simply beautiful with a solid and creative design. Canada

I ordered this to replace one that broke that I bought at an antique store. The writeup mentioned Swarovski crystals and was quite effusive, so I thought it would glitter and be gorgeous on my black winter coat. When it arrived, I was disappointed that it just didnt have the wow factor. It was pretty, but just not, in my opinion, and for the cost, as sparkly as I had expected. The metal surrounding and holding the stones is thick which may account for this. I returned it. mass
