Museum Story

Wilson A. Bentley (1865-1931), a self-educated Vermont farmer, was so enthralled by snowflakes that he adapted a microscope to a bellows camera to capture images of these tiny beauties. His pioneering work in photomicrography produced thousands of pictures of different snowflakes and proved that each fleeting snowflake was a unique masterpiece. Almost 500 of these photos were bestowed to the Smithsonian by Mr. Bentley. Now curated by our National Museum of American History, these striking images inspired our selection of glittering gifts, decorative pieces and apparel.

Beautiful pin for a coat; receive lots of compliments. What they don't see is the poor clasp on the pin that does not stay closed; I am constantly afraid it is going to fall off my coat. Poor design and/or workmanship on the clasp. North Dakota

I have received compliments every time I have worn this item. I've worn it both as a pendant and as a brooch. My only concern is that the clasp opens very easily when worn as a brooch, so I am concerned it may open accidently and I will lose the snowflake without realizing it. Ohio
