Museum Story
Wilson A. Bentley (1865-1931), a self-educated Vermont farmer, was so enthralled by snowflakes that he adapted a microscope to a bellows camera to capture images of these tiny beauties. His pioneering work in photomicrography produced thousands of pictures of different snowflakes and proved that each fleeting snowflake was a unique masterpiece. Almost 500 of these photos were bestowed to the Smithsonian by Mr. Bentley. Now curated by our National Museum of American History, these striking images inspired our selection of glittering gifts, decorative pieces and apparel.
