Description

The Jefferson Bible, Smithsonian Edition: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth
by Thomas Jefferson

The Jefferson Bible is an exquisite full-color reproduction of his famous, much-edited version of Jesus' life and teachings, cut and pasted from eight Bibles'two each in English, French, Latin and Greek. Includes his hand-written margin notes, chapters on his Enlightenment views, and a review of the painstaking process to preserve the original.

An introduction by Smithsonian curators Harry R. Rubenstein and Barbara Clark Smith explains Jefferson's intentions in creating the volume and the ways that his endeavor reflected his Enlightenment ideals and Revolutionary spirit. Smithsonian conservator Janice Stagnitto Ellis's essay on conservation reveals surprising insights into how Jefferson crafted the book so precisely. Faithful to the unique artifact so painstakingly created by Thomas Jefferson himself, The Jefferson Bible, Smithsonian Edition makes the thoughts of a great American mind accessible for generations to come.

I purchased this as a gift, and am back to order one for myself because I didn't want to let this one go. This is beautifully done and so authentic to Jefferson's original. I love the little fold out notes that are included in the reproduction. I highly recommend this for either history buffs or Biblical scholars. Dallas, TX

I bought The Jefferson Bible as a gift for my sister who loves everything Jefferson. A friend of mine found this online and forwarded the link to me. Since it is a gift I haven't removed the plastic wrapping. Once it's opened and I see my sister's reaction, I'll be able to be able to review The Jefferson Bible. Springfield, VA

Customer Rating: 5 out of 5 I've seen other editions of the "Jefferson Bible"...

I've seen other editions of the "Jefferson Bible" elsewhere, but none as comprehensive nor as authentic as this one. Not just a "reprint", this is a genuine facsimile of Thomas Jefferson's original clipped extracts from the King James Version of the New Testament, complete with parallel text clippings in French, Latin and the original Greek. Jefferson's marginal commentaries have been preserved, and the introductory essays on the History of the Jefferson Bible, and the Conservation of the original to produce this magnificent Smithsonian edition are highly informative. I like this brand-new, affordable edition so much I bought two - one for myself and one as a Christmas gift for my 91-year-old father. I know he'll be thrilled. Houston, Texas

I am grateful for the opportunity to enjoy fully this part of the mind of Thomas Jefferson. I am grateful to learn that he believed that what Jesus taught was "the most sublime and benevolent code of morals which has ever been offered to man." I am grateful for this light shed on Thomas Jefferson. Oregon

The Jefferson Bible has been beautifully assembled to reflect the life of Jesus in a chronological order. It is a wonderful replica of Jefferson's Bible and so interesting to see how he combined the Synoptic Gospels into his own version with each verse marked to indicate from which Gospel it had come. I have found it useful in my New Testament studies. Pacific Palisades, CA
