Description

Southeast Asia is home to a rich variety of textile traditions, from simple woven linens to precisely woven shawls to block-printed home decor and apparel. Ajrahk is one of the most intricate types of block printing, from softening and cleaning the raw cloth to using hand-carved wooden blocks to print each color of the pattern separately.

This traditional kurta, or long tunic, uses the typical ajrahk colors of crimson and indigo on a background of silk velvet. The collarless style features a quarter-length button neckline and high slits at each side for ease of movement and layering. Dress this dramatic look up with luxurious jewelry or keep it more relaxed with a pair of comfortable leggings.

Museum Story

The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, opened to the public in 1923, a gift to the nation from Charles Lang Freer. The Gallery contains an extensive collection of oriental art, prints, sculpture and silk panels, as well as a major group of 19th and 20th century American works.
