Description
Throughout South and Central Asia, the kameez is a part of virtually everyone's wardrobe. A long shirt or tunic, it comes in as many colors, fabrics, and style variations as you can imagine, from simple cotton to sumptuous silk velvet like this one. Hand-stitched dabka embroidery—a type of embellishment done with gold metallic thread—decorates the cuffs, hem, and flattering notched neckline. Often used on wedding dresses and always a mark of high style, dabka is a speciality of artisans in the northern desert of Rajasthan, India.
Museum Story
The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, opened to the public in 1923, a gift to the nation from Charles Lang Freer. The Gallery contains an extensive collection of oriental art, prints, sculpture and silk panels, as well as a major group of 19th and 20th century American works.
