When the lights go on, this MOVA Antique Earth Globe goes around and around. No batteries or any power needed here, just ambient light to make the world turn in or out of its base. The globe depicts three historic voyages taken by Captain James Cook in a design created by Giovanni Maria Cassini in 1790. A red ecliptic line shows the sun's position each day of the year.
The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum maintains the world's largest and most significant collection of aviation and space artifacts, encompassing all aspects of human flight, as well as related works of art and archival materials.
