Description

Alma Thomas (1891–1978) was the first graduate of Howard University's fine arts program in 1924, and she spent most of her career working as an art teacher. After retiring, she devoted herself to painting and today Thomas's work is collected by major museums across the country, including the Hirshhorn.

Late in life she reflected on growing up in Georgia as a Black person: "One of the things we couldn't do was go into museums, let alone think of hanging our pictures there. My, times have changed. Just look at me now."

Celebrate this pathbreaking artist and beloved teacher with our cozy Women's Alma Thomas Cashmere Crewneck Sweater. Made from 100% sustainably sourced, fair trade cashmere, and hand-stitched in New York City with Thomas's name in hot pink thread.

Museum Story

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden's holdings encompass one of the most important collections of postwar American and European art in the world, and has been a leading voice for groundbreaking artists since 1974.
