Description

In the gripping autobiography Never Panic Early: An Apollo 13 Astronaut's Journey, astronaut Fred Haise, Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 13, offers a detailed firsthand account of when disaster struck three days into his mission to the moon. An oxygen tank exploded, a crewmate uttered the now iconic words, "Houston, we've had a problem here," and the world anxiously watched as one of history's most incredible rescue missions unfolded. Haise brings readers into the heart of his experience on the challenging mission—considered NASA's finest hour—and reflects on his life and career as an Apollo astronaut.

In this personal and illuminating memoir, Haise takes an introspective look at the thrills and triumphs, regrets and disappointments, and lessons that defined his career, including his years as a military fighter pilot and his successful 20-year NASA career that would have made him the sixth man on the moon had Apollo 13 gone right. Many of his stories navigate fear, hope, and resilience. In Never Panic Early, Haise explores what it was like to work for NASA in its glory years and demonstrates a true ability to deal with the unexpected.

Customer Rating: 1 out of 5 Overall disappointing

1st, the book isn't autographed. Astronaut Haise has never touched the book. There is an autographed bookplate inside of it that he autographed and someone else affixed it to the inside of the book. 2nd, the book is very poorly written. If you're expecting an inside commentary from an astronaut who flew on Apollo 13 you'll get very little here. Essentially, he writes that there was a bang, a shimmy, we went around the backside of the moon and came home. Oh, and he contracted a UTI while inflight. Overall, it was very disappointing. I didn't even finish reading the part about him flight testing the Space Shuttle Enterprise. Good luck Astronaut Haise. I'm sorry for leaving the bad review. But I still think of you as an American hero, and your book has a permanent place on my bookshelf because of who you are and for the autographed bookplate inside of it.

Customer Rating: 5 out of 5 Great signed edition

This is a great read. I purchased multiple books and I can confirm they are in fact hand signed, contrary to the other reviewers comment.

Customer Rating: 3 out of 5 Signed Edition?

The Fred Haise signature on the bookplate looks like it was printed with the bookplate label. I will keep the book regardless, of an authentic signature or a facsimile signature. I just do not want to believe that the Smithsonian would try to pass off a printed facsimile signature on a bookplate as authentic. The invoice reads Item number 11024, Item Description Never Panic Early Signed. The description of the book states, Includes signed bookplate by the author. I do sincerely hope that I'm wrong about this, as I love everything about our space program. This maybe because I grew up in the era of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space missions. My star rating will jump to 5 stars if I can get verification of the Fred Haise signature.
