Description

Sheila Bridges is an internationally recognized designer who lives and works within the Harlem creative cultural community that is the backdrop for her art. After searching for the perfect French toile wallpaper for her own home, she says, "I decided that it quite simply didn't exist." Her Harlem Toile de Jouy series is inspired by pastoral French toile from the late 1700's and portrays African Americans in classical settings while lampooning some of the stereotypes deeply woven into visual culture.

This square silk scarf places some of Bridges' iconic figures over a historic map of Harlem, as if creating a guide to the neighborhood's entertainments or highlighting its landmarks.
