This handmade Simon Pearce glass paperweight features an exquisitely etched design, inspired by the large circular window in the north side of the Smithsonian Institution Building (affectionately known as “The Castle” because of its turreted Medieval-Revival style architecture). A stunning medallion with the Smithsonian logo etched on the rough-hewn circumference, this Smithsonian Castle Handmade Glass Paperweight is beautifully handmade in the U.S.A. with satisfying heft. A unique and meaningful gift you won’t find anywhere else. Beautifully gift boxed. 3.18"dia. x 0.5"h.
Affectionately known as “The Castle,” the 1855 Smithsonian Institution Building was designed by American architect James Renwick, Jr. to emulate England’s oldest universities. It counts among its Medieval-Revival architectural details a large circular window above the entrance facing the National Mall. Architectural windows like this date back to medieval cathedrals and were always placed high to catch the light.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
