The 2 bald eagles in the Smithsonian National Zoo’s American Trail exhibit are key examples of endangered-species success stories. Their road to recovery has been greatly aided by important contributions by the National Zoo. Once near extinction, American Bison were introduced to the National Mall in 1889. Two years later they were transferred to the National Zoo’s Rock Creek campus. Today, 2 American Bison—Zora and Wilma—can be seen at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.

Bald Eagles and American Bison are studied by our National Museum of Natural History’s Department of Vertebrate Zoology.
