Smithsonian Institution Exclusive

Joyously patterned with mosaic-like pinwheels, this pure Smithsonian Cameroon Silk Scarf has intricate designs. The stunning curvilinear patterns were painstakingly created with highly prized glass trade beads, sewn onto plant fiber, then affixed to a gourd. With the addition of a beaded wood stopper, Bamum peoples artisans of Cameroon transformed an ordinary vessel into an extraordinary artwork and an important emblem of status. This item resides in our National Museum of African Art, where it is admired by visitors to the museum. Hand-rolled edges. 100% silk. Imported.
Echoes the motifs bejeweling a late 19th to early 20th century royal Cameroon palm-wine bottle in the collections of our National Museum of African Art.
