Simply magnificent. This breathtaking floral Smithsonian Blue and White Cloisonné Jar depicts a phoenix, a symbol in Chinese culture of joy and peace and an omen for auspicious days to come. A beautiful example of the time-honored craft of cloisonné, the painterly motifs were created by hand-applying rich enamels to specially shaped wire compartments soldered to the brass jar. The colors came to life when the jar was fired in a kiln, then polished by hand. Display this masterpiece on the included wooden stand.
Our Freer Gallery of Art—donated to the nation by Charles Lang Freer—curates one of the world's most important collections of Asian art. In addition to its extensive collection of oriental art, prints, sculpture, and silk panels, the Gallery contains a number of fine cloisonné pieces.
Jar: 7.1"h. x 7.1"dia. Included Wooden Stand: 3.5"dia. x 1"h.
