We commissioned this three-strand Smithsonian Blue Ombre Pearl Necklace as a stylish homage to the many spectacular pearls of every color and shape in our National Gem and Mineral Collection. These lustrous 8mm peacock, silver, and white freshwater pearls are presented in graduated lengths, giving them a beautiful drape. Natural variations will occur.
This Smithsonian Blue Ombre Pearl Necklace recalls pearl jewelry pieces in our National Gem and Mineral Collection housed in our National Museum of Natural History. One of the greatest collections of its kind, its over 375,000 individual specimens include pearl treasures such as the Van Buren Pearls, the Dunn Pearl Necklace, and the Picasso Kunzite Necklace, beaded with 30 South Sea baroque pearls.
18.25"l. Spring ring closure.
The only gemstones made by living creatures, rare NATURAL PEARLS are produced by mollusks who layer calcium carbonate around a microscopic irritant. Most pearls today are FRESHWATER PEARLS, cultured or farmed by implanting a grafted piece of shell into freshwater pearl mussels. SHELL PEARLS, also known as simulated or replica pearls, are made from mother-of-pearl. Pearl is the traditional birthstone for June.
