An important feldspar gemstone, labradorite's lovely iridescence arises from light diffracting off closely spaced layers of feldspar crystals. As the stone is rotated, flashes of blue, green, yellow, and red are displayed. Labradorite is named for Labrador where it was first discovered in 1770.
