Discovered in Nova Scotia in 1868, howlite is a borate mineral which is typically white or grayish white with fine veins, often in a web-like pattern. Because of its porosity, howlite is often dyed to imitate other minerals, especially turquoise. Howlite is also known as white buffalo stone.
Deriving its name from its sodium content, sodalite is an opaque blue gemstone, almost always veined with white calcite. Shades of sodalite range from light to deep royal blue and from grayish blue to violet.
The most valuable gem variety of crystalline quartz, amethyst ranges in color from pale lilac to deep reddish purple. The official birthstone for those born in February, amethyst is said to help maintain calm and composure.
