Santana Phillips Wedding Vase
Item #77313
We regret that this item is not available at this time.
Intricately delineated with a stylized floral motif, this striking Santana Phillips Wedding Vase is a one-of-a-kind work of art. Reflecting centuries of Acoma Pueblo pottery making, Santana Phillips paints his handmade clay Wedding Vase with natural pigments before pit-firing it outdoors. Handcrafted in New Mexico.
Acoma Pueblo Wedding Vases like this one—crafted entirely by hand by Acoma Pueblo artist Santana Phillips—and other Acoma Pueblo pottery are included in the collections of the National Museum of the American Indian. An important part of a tribal wedding ceremony (equivalent to exchanging wedding bands), the wedding vase is filled with holy water and offered first to the bride and then the groom. Each takes a sip from a different spout, which symbolize the lives of the bride and groom. The arched bridge, or handle, represents their unity.
