Navajo Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and Scalloped Sterling Silver Dangle Earrings
Item #42280
We regret that this item is not available at this time.
The stylized scalloping and floral designs ornamenting these Navajo Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and Scalloped Sterling Silver Dangle Earrings feature two Navajo silversmithing techniques: overlay and stampwork. Centering these Navajo earrings are gorgeous sky-blue cabochons of Sleeping Beauty turquoise. Handcrafted in the U.S.A. by a Navajo silversmith. Naturally occurring turquoise and individually crafted settings assure each earring is one-of-a-kind.
The “skystone” turquoise—like the beautiful cabochons centering these Navajo Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and Scalloped Sterling Silver Dangle Earrings—has been mined by Native Americans since 1000 CE. Highly sought for its sky blue color and little-to-no veining, Sleeping Beauty turquoise comes from a now-closed Arizona mine of the same name. The long tradition of stamping designs into sterling silver is believed to have begun in the 1850s with Atsidi Sani, who is said to have learned to work silver from a Mexican smith. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian includes many beautiful examples of Navajo hand-stamped sterling silver jewelry, many adorned with Sleeping Beauty turquoise.
