Navajo Silver Concha Brooch
Item #40458
We regret that this item is not available at this time.
Wearable art handcrafted by Navajo silversmith Melvin Francis, this exquisite Navajo Silver Concha Pin is hand-stamped with exceptional artistry. Worked entirely in sterling silver, this Navajo Silver Concha Pin also features refined appliqué and repoussé work. Handcrafted in the U.S.A. Individually crafted, each brooch is one-of-a-kind.
Originally conchas—like this Navajo Silver Concha Pin—were linked together to form Navajo belts, one of the most compelling designs of the Navajo silversmith’s art. The use of conchas is believed to have been inspired by those adorning the headstalls of Mexican bridles. Handmade conchas like these are time-consuming to make, with each design element being struck one at a time with a home-made die and a hand hammer. Our National Museum of the American Indian curates hundreds of Navajo jewelry pieces, including silver concha belts, buckles, buttons, brooches and earrings.
