This magnificent Macmillan's Illustrated Standard Novels Wooden Puzzle depicts an 1896 art nouveau poster for Macmillan's Illustrated Standard Novels, Peacock Edition by Albert Angus Turbayne. Crafted of quarter-inch maple veneer plywood and the finest archival ink and paper, the puzzle's 453 one-of-a-shape pieces include dozens of whimsical shapes. (Whimsy pieces were first popularized by Victorian puzzle cutters, who shaped some of a puzzle's pieces on a "whim." The whimsical shapes delighted puzzle solvers with shapes reflecting a puzzle's theme.) Made in the U.S.A.
The beautifully plumed peacock gracing this Macmillan's Illustrated Standard Novels Wooden Puzzle recalls peacock motifs adorning the Peacock Room at our Freer Gallery of Art. Decorated by James McNeill Whistler (of Whistler's Mother fame) with peacock-themed murals, panels, patterns, and palette, this room was purchased by Charles Lang Freer in 1904 and later donated to the Smithsonian museum which now bears his name.

"This puzzle was a pure joy to put together. Just the right balance of complexity and fun. The shapes were intricate, and the picture was challenging, but not impossible. There were quite a number of cute and funny character pieces - people dancing, people playing musical instruments, birds, flowers. I haven't enjoyed a puzzle so much in years."
