Fit for Incan royalty, these stunning Lapis Lazuli Link Pierced Earrings are handmade by Chilean artisans who hand cut and inlay pillowed lapis lazuli—techniques passed down from generations before—into gleaming sterling silver settings. The graduated link designs are elegant and nuanced. Natural variations will occur.
These Lapis Lazuli Link Pierced Earrings celebrate finely carved lapis objets curated by our National Gem Collection at our National Museum of Natural History. One of the greatest collections of its kind, the National Gem and Mineral Collection includes over 375,000 individual specimens and such treasured pieces as the Hope Diamond and an exquisite lapis figurine hand carved in Afghanistan, where the finest lapis lazuli in the world is still found.
Intensely deep blue in color, lapis lazuli, or lapis, has been valued as an ornamental stone since the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt and Rome—which valued it more highly than sapphires and turquoise. A rock composed of three different minerals, the finest lapis still comes from a remote mountain valley in northern Afghanistan, where it has been continuously mined for more than 6,000 years.
