Handmade Kokeshi Doll With Cat
Item #85141
We regret that this item is not available at this time.
This charming Handmade Kokeshi Doll with Cat is a creative iteration of Japanese folk art dolls first made by early 19th century woodworkers in the Tohoku region of Northern Japan. Skilled makers of bowls and trays, these kijiya, or woodworkers, began to apply their skills to making simple dolls to sell as toys and souvenirs to visitors to nearby onsens, or hot springs. Hand carved from sun-cured mizuki wood and individually painted, lacquer finished, and polished, this Handmade Kokeshi Doll with Cat is a superb example of Japanese craftsmanship.
This Handmade Kokeshi Doll with Cat recalls dolls depicted in Japanese artworks at our Freer Gallery of Art. A gift to the nation by Charles Lang Freer, the Gallery contains an extensive collection of oriental art, prints, sculpture and ceramics.
