Rounded and curved in sublime sophistication, these Gold Vermeil Branch and Pearl Pierced Earrings dangle freshwater pearls from sinuous 24k vermeil branches. Created for the Smithsonian by Atara Designs, these versatile and elegant earrings are made in the U.S.A. Natural variations will occur.
These Gold Vermeil Branch and Pearl Pierced Earrings evoke pearls curated in our National Gem Collection at our National Museum of Natural History. One of the greatest collections of its kind, the National Gem and Mineral Collection includes over 375,000 individual specimens and such treasured pearl jewelry as the Van Buren Pearls, the Dunn Pearls, and the South Sea Glow Pearl Necklace.
Approx. 2"l.
The only gemstones made by living creatures, rare NATURAL PEARLS are produced by mollusks who layer calcium carbonate around a microscopic irritant. Most pearls used commercially today are FRESHWATER PEARLS, cultured or farmed by implanting a grafted piece of shell into freshwater pearl mussels. SHELL PEARLS, also known as simulated or replica pearls are made from mother-of-pearl. Pearl is the birthstone for June.

"My husband bought these along with the necklace as a set. I can't wear them. The "wire" is so thick, it won't go into my pierced ear. These are thicker than any earrings I have, so I suspect you'll have trouble, unless you have a very large piercing in your ear. Customer service was no help returning these, I'm out of luck."
