Smithsonian Exclusive Smithsonian Institution Exclusive

Accessibly regal, these hand-strung Glass "Sapphire" and Pearl Shell Pierced Earrings dangle glamorous glass "sapphire" drops from triplets of shell-based freshwater pearls. These Smithsonian exclusives feature gold-filled spacers and gold-plated earwires. Handmade in the U.S.A.
These Glass "Sapphire" & Shell Pearl Pierced Earrings are representative of fine jewelry in the costume collection at our National Museum of American History, Behring Center, which curates more than 30,000 garments and accessories. Among the many accessories included in the collection are pieces of jewelry, scarves, shoes, and handbags.
The only gemstones made by living creatures, rare NATURAL PEARLS are produced by mollusks who layer calcium carbonate around a microscopic irritant. Most pearls used commercially today are FRESHWATER PEARLS, cultured or farmed by implanting a grafted piece of shell into freshwater pearl mussels. SHELL PEARLS, also known as simulated or replica pearls are made from mother-of-pearl. Pearl is the birthstone for June.
