Flora: Inside the Secret World of Plants is sumptuously photographed and illustrated. This gorgeous page-turner makes a joy of botany with its clear and fascinating explanations on such varied topics—including photosynthesis, seed growth, and the ability of flowers to manipulate nearby creatures. Who knew? Botanical patterns often graced the robes of Qing dynasty empresses.
More than decorations, Qing dynasty empresses were multi-taskers, who often wielded exceptional influence in the arts, religion, politics, and diplomacy, in addition to their duties as mothers and royals. We've curated a collection of apparel and accessories in sumptuous fabrications, vivid prints, and rich red and coral colors—all of which echo the beauty of the lavish court robes and jewelry—several examples of which are included in the exhibit of Qing empress' costumes, jewelry, paintings, and furnishings exhibited at our Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.
Hardcover. 440 pages.

"A beautiful book. Every page is illustrated with great photographs and art work. Details and classifications are discussed for all parts of plants; roots, stems and branches, leaves, and flowers. This a great text to introduce someone into the world of botany but is also a delightful way to browse away an hour. It's great as a reference book but is equally superb as a coffee table book."
