Hand carved with exceptional depth, this genuine amethyst pendant depicts a dragon. Once believed to be the god of rain, thunder, rainbows, and stars, Chinese dragons are believed to be benevolent creatures from whom the Chinese people have descended. This magnificent amethyst dragon pendant is presented on an adjustable cord, beaded, primarily, with onyx orbs. Natural variations will occur.
An important collection of Chinese dragon pendants from the Eastern Zhou dynasty (5th – 4th century BCE) is curated by the Freer|Sackler. These two Smithsonian museums of Asian art—the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery—are home to more than forty thousand objects, many donated by Mr. Freer and Mr. Sackler.
Pendant, 2.1"l. x 1.4"w. Adjustable beaded cord, 16-24"l.
Amethyst is the most valuable gem variety of crystalline quartz. Amethyst ranges in color from pale lilac to deep reddish purple. The official birthstone for those born in February, amethyst is said to guard against drunkenness.
