The only gemstones made by living creatures, rare NATURAL PEARLS are produced by mollusks who layer calcium carbonate around a microscopic irritant. Most pearls used commercially today are FRESHWATER PEARLS, cultured or farmed by implanting a grafted piece of shell into freshwater pearl mussels. SHELL PEARLS, also known as simulated or replica pearls are made from mother-of-pearl. Pearl is the birthstone for June.

The rosy pink variety of crystalline quartz, rose quartz ranges in color from pale to medium pink. Rose quartz beads date back to 7000 BCE Mesopotamia. Rose quartz amulets of the early Americas were thought to balance the emotions.

The pink to purplish pink variety of beryl (best known for its gem varieties of emerald and aquamarine), morganite is named for the banker and financier J.P. Morgan an avid collector of gemstones. Legends hold that beryl wards off evil spirits.
