Inspire excellence in math and science with this Barbie Inspiring Women™ Series Katherine Johnson Doll—a Barbie doll representation of African American Katherine Johnson, who flawlessly calculated the trajectory of NASA's first manned space flight, which was accomplished by the "Freedom 7" Mercury capsule. Includes stand. Certificate of authenticity. Plastic, fabric. Imported.
Katherine Johnson was a child prodigy who entered high school at age 10 and graduated summa cum laude from college at age 18 with two degrees in science and one in French. In the mid-1950s she joined a pool of African American women hired by NASA to work as human computers. Katherine calculated the trajectory of America's first American-manned flight in space. Her calculations were so accurate, they had Katherine double check the figures of the computers to which NASA later switched. The "Freedom 7" Mercury capsule whose trajectory Katherine so precisely calculated is curated by our National Air and Space Museum.
