The artistic design accenting this African American History and Culture Museum Ladies Corona T-Shirt echoes two openwork designs ornamenting the uppermost part of the Museum’s architecture, the corona. The Museum’s bronze-clad corona follows the classical column form of base, shaft, and capital. (In the fine artistic tradition of the Yoruba of West Africa, the column, or wood post, was usually crafted with a capital resembling a crown, or corona.) The corona motifs celebrate intricate ironwork designs created by enslaved African American craftspeople in Charleston and New Orleans. Reaching toward the sky, the corona expresses faith, hope and resiliency. The 19th and newest Smithsonian Institution Museum—the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC)—opens in fall 2016.
