A proud and elegant celebration of our National Museum of African American History and Culture, the openwork pattern of our African American History and Culture Museum Bronze Corona Pierced Earrings echoes the ornamental bronze lattice girding the museum’s corona-shaped exterior. The corona follows the classical column form of base, shaft, and capital. (In the fine artistic tradition of the Yoruba of West Africa, the column, or wood post, was usually crafted with a capital resembling a crown, or corona.) The corona’s motifs celebrate intricate ironwork designs created by enslaved African American craftspeople in Charleston and New Orleans. Reaching toward the sky, the corona expresses faith, hope and resiliency.
