Made entirely by hand by Chilean artisans—who employ techniques passed down from generations before them—these gorgeous 18K Vermeil Graduated Lapis Lazuli Link Pierced Earrings are composed of gently curved and pillowed cabochons of hand-shaped Andean lapis. The cabochons are then inlaid into gleaming settings of 18k gold vermeil (gold plated sterling silver). Vermeil tongue and groove clasp. Natural variations will occur.
The lapis lazuli cabochons of these 18k Vermeil Graduated Lapis Lazuli Link Pierced Earrings celebrates the many lapis jewelry pieces, primary gems, and carvings that are curated throughout the Smithsonian. Lapis is especially well represented in our Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology Gems and Minerals, our National Museum of African Art, and our Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
Intensely deep blue in color, lapis lazuli, or lapis, has been valued as an ornamental stone since the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt and Rome—which valued it more highly than sapphires and turquoise. A rock composed of three different minerals, the finest lapis still comes from a remote mountain valley in northern Afghanistan, where it has been continuously mined for more than 6,000 years.
