Museum Story
These refined Four Seasons Pearl Earrings recall pearl jewelry pieces in our National Gem and Mineral Collection housed in our National Museum of Natural History. One of the greatest collections of its kind, its over 375,000 individual specimens include pearl treasures such as the Van Buren Pearls, the Dunn Pearl Necklace, and the Picasso Kunzite Necklace, beaded with 30 South Sea baroque pearls.
Gemstone Info
The only gemstones made by living creatures, rare NATURAL PEARLS are produced by mollusks who layer calcium carbonate around a microscopic irritant. Most pearls used commercially today are FRESHWATER PEARLS, cultured or farmed by implanting a grafted piece of shell into freshwater pearl mussels. SHELL PEARLS, also known as simulated or replica pearls are made from mother-of-pearl. Pearl is the birthstone for June.
