One Reversible African Mudcloth Jacket, two great looks! When is a jacket more than a stylish article of clothing? When the pattern—taken from traditional Malian mud cloth, or bògòlanfini—is hand-painted on hand-loomed cloth. A dramatic, lightweight neutral, perfect for spring through fall and cool summer nights, you can change the look by wearing the striking reverse of this fashion-forward Reversible African Mudcloth Jacket. Handsome wooden buttons. Pockets both sides. 100% cotton. Imported. NOTE TO CUSTOMERS: Both the MEDIUM and LARGE sizes of this jacket have a roomier fit. You may wish to consider ordering a smaller size. Sizes, S, M, L, XL.
This eye-catching Reversible African Mudcloth Jacket recalls a late 20th-century Malian mud cloth, or bògòlanfini, in the rich textile collections of our National Museum of African Art. Traditional Malian mud-dyed cloth garments feature geometric motifs representative of medical, historical, social and moral concepts. The labor-intensive mud cloth process involves fermenting iron-rich soil, dyeing cotton cloth (often locally cultivated and spun), soaking the cloth in a leaf-infused solution, drying it in the sun, then carefully staining the negative space surrounding the design motifs with the fermented mud. Finally, the cloth is washed to heighten the design contrast.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
