Museum Story

An elegant tribute to the Smithsonian Institution's newest Museum, our National Museum of African American History and Culture Brass Corona Commemorative Ornament echoes the openwork pattern accenting the uppermost part of the Museum's architecture, the corona. The Museum's bronze-clad corona follows the classical column form of base, shaft, and capital. (In the fine artistic tradition of the Yoruba of West Africa, the column, or wood post, was usually crafted with a capital resembling a crown, or corona.) The corona's motifs celebrate intricate ironwork designs created by enslaved African American craftspeople in Charleston and New Orleans. Reaching toward the sky, the corona expresses faith, hope and resiliency. The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) opened in fall 2016.
