Considered a folk art today, baskets woven from discarded phone cable, or “scoobie,” began in the 1950s. As they patrolled the streets of South African cities, Zulu night watchmen used the wires they found to decorate their war sticks. The colors inspired Zulus to apply this new medium to their centuries-old basket designs. Demonstrated here in this useful and décor-friendly Zulu Telephone Wire Platter, which showcases their intricate motifs, the making of these baskets dramatically reduces Zulu unemployment. 2.5"h. x 12"dia.
Examples of Zulu centuries-old basket designs are found in our African Art Museum.
