The mission of the Blue Angels is to enhance U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps recruiting, to represent Navy and Marine Corps aviation to the United States and its armed forces and to serve as international ambassadors of good will. The oldest formal aerobatic team currently flying, the pilots of the Blue Angel squadron annually fly the F/A-18 Hornet military aircraft in more than 70 shows at 34 locations throughout the United States. A highly collectible model, it makes an exceptional gift for executives, aviators and military personnel—future, active or retired. Plastic jet; wooden stand. Scale 1:48. Ages 14 and up. 14"l. x 10.25"w. 13"h.
In 1889, then Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, Samuel P. Langley, acquired a model of John Stringfellow’s triplane to inaugurate the Smithsonian’s model aircraft collection. Since then, the Smithsonian’s curators and modelers have developed one of the finest collections of model aircraft and spacecraft in the world. This collection is housed in the National Air and Space Museum.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
