This jigsaw depiction of an elegant cherry blossom viewing at Asukayama (one of the five Edo-period gateways to Tokyo) reprises a late 18th-century triptych by Japanese artist Shunsho. Nearly two feet in width, the puzzle’s 474 one-of-a-shape pieces include dozens of figural “whimsy” shapes associated with the era of shogun rule—samurai, courtiers, a city gate and more. This Cherry Blossom Viewing at Asukayama Wooden Puzzle is made with archival ink and paper over quarter-inch maple veneer plywood. Made in the U.S.A. Completed puzzle, 10.75" x 22".
Many of Shunsho's artworks reside in the collections of our Freer Gallery of Art.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
