Museum Provenance
The Concorde was a supersonic airliner which flew thousands of passengers across the Atlantic at twice the speed of sound for more than 25 years. Designed and built by Aérospatiale of France and the British Aviation Corporation, the Concorde carried up to 100 passengers who enjoyed first class service while airborne half the hours of a conventional flight. High operating costs, high fares and a shrinking market ultimately led to a reduction of service until all the Concordes were retired in 2003. In June of that year, France donated Concorde F-BVFA to the National Air and Space Museum. It is currently on display in the Boeing Aviation Hangar at the Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
