Museum Provenance
This Oversized Glass Holiday Platter is inspired by an object in our ceramics and glass collections. These holdings of our National Museum of American History, Behring Center, include much of the Smithsonian’s collection of both artistic and functional glass and ceramics. The glass collection houses specimens of c.1500 BC glass, moving forward through time, with bowls, bottles and vases illustrating the historical development of glass. An extensive collection of American glass from 18th-century utilitarian glassware to 20th-century Tiffany glass is represented. Examples of millefiori glass, a floral pattern made by cutting cross sections of bundled fused glass rods of various colors and sizes and embedding them in glass, are included.
