Museum Provenance

This “big cat” is unique among the usually solitary felines because it lives in organized social groups, called prides. A few resident male lions are often part of the pride, with one being the dominant male lion for a year or two before being replaced by a younger, stronger male. Lions live in parts of eastern and southern Africa, but the Asian species is now found only in western India. Hundred of mammals, including the lion, are exhibited in the Kenneth E. Behring Family Hall of Mammals at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.
