Cons: I had purchased this as a wedding gift and was disappointed with the textbook type cover and appearance of the book. It looks like a college class textbook on the outside. The material inside is ok for the person with some familiarity of key books to cross reference for similar shells in your area. It is big and heavy for home use not for taking along to the seashore. Pros: BUT, It is a very nice, informative introduction to the world of shells though; better than coffee table type books. Would make a nice gift for a less formal occasion or for yourself.

This is a beautiful book - I got it for my Mom for Christmas because she collects shells. It tells you where the shells are found and gives a picture -and the pics are beautiful!

Beautiful photo enlargements define details clearly, with actual size photos and descriptions completing info. Each page features a flattened world map with marked areas where the specific creatures are found. Too big to carry with you, but great resource at home.

Some might prefer a reference that groups those shells which are found in specific areas

Purchased for adult daughter who collects shells, then creates art with them. (Now she won't need to borrow MY book).
