Exquisitely worked in bronze and sterling silver, this Smithsonian Castle Window Jewelry Collection has been created exclusively for the Smithsonian by famed jewelry designer Cynthia Gale. The necklace is cleverly designed to be worn three ways: with the window pendant centering the lustrous strand of freshwater pearls, the pearls alone, or the pendant on a chain of your choosing. The matching pierced earrings dangle gracefully from French wires with dual-metal rosette accents. The on-trend bronze cuff bracelet echoes the window tracery with alternating rosette insets and cutouts. The post earrings is a rich and unexpected pairing of bronze and sterling silver bringing to life the beautiful tracery of “The Castle” window motif. Sterling silver rosette insets enrich the design.

Museum Provenance

Affectionately known as “The Castle,” the 1855 Smithsonian Institution Building was designed by American architect James Renwick, Jr. to emulate England’s oldest universities. It counts among its Medieval-Revival architectural details a large circular window above the entrance facing the National Mall. Architectural windows like this date back to medieval cathedrals and were always placed high to catch the light.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
