Soft, beautiful and incredibly versatile, this Marbled Silk Scarf can be worn as a head covering, shawl or stylishly tied wardrobe accessory. An original design by Virginia fiber artist Barb Polin, this Marbled Silk Scarf showcases a marbling technique, which dates back to twelfth-century Europe. To create the pattern for this Marbled Silk Scarf, variously sized comb-like tools are run through a large tray of ink drops, floating atop a thickened water mixture. The silk is laid on the marbled surface for just a few seconds, then removed and heat-set for color permanence. Since only one print per inking is possible, each Marbled Silk Scarf is truly one-of-a-kind. Made in the USA. Can be hand washed. 100% silk.  60"l. x 12"w.

Museum Provenance

This Marbled Silk Scarf is inspired by textiles in the vast collections of the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, whose textile collection contains a wide variety of woven and non-woven pieces, including tapestries, jacquards, and a large number of woven costume accessories. Our accessories and apparel display the breadth of woven fabrics and patterns found in the collection.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
