These oversized table favors with their velvet ribbon ties and actual peacock feather adornments redefine opulent merriment. Pull these Peacock Celebration Crackers open with a “pop,” to release a foil crown, a silly joke and a metal trinket. Box of 6, each, 14"l.
In 1904 Charles Lang Freer acquired a London shipping magnate’s dining room (painted by James McNeill Whistler in rich peacock hues overlain with golden peacock designs) and moved it to his Detroit mansion. There he filled the shelves with the ceramics he had collected from Egypt and Asia. Painstakingly restored to its 1908 appearance (including ceramics), it is now on display at the Freer Gallery of Art’s exhibit, The Peacock Room Comes to America. Our selection of this elegant, peacock-themed piece was inspired by this beautiful room, which highlights Freer’s belief in the “aesthetic relationships among the museum’s diverse collections.”
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
