The male cub Bei Bei (born August 22, 2015) can be seen in person at the Smithsonian National Zoo’s Giant Panda Habitat or online via the Panda Cam. Jointly named by First Lady Michelle Obama and the First Lady of the People’s Republic of China, Peng Livuan, Bei Bei’s name means “precious, treasure.” Symbolic of endangered animals around the globe, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute is a leader in giant panda conservation.
