Throughout 2014, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History will celebrate our nation’s most iconic emblem, the Star-Spangled Banner and the National Anthem the flag inspired Frances Scott Key to write. Displayed for nearly 50 years in the Smithsonian’s Art and Industries Building, the Star-Spangled Banner was transferred in 1964 to our National Museum of American History. Since the completion of the flag’s most recent conservation, it has been continuously displayed in a special, environmentally-controlled chamber on the museum’s second floor. For six short weeks this summer, the Star-Spangled Banner will be accompanied by the original manuscript of our National Anthem for which this flag was the inspiration.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
